From Scratch
Building a brand from the ground up with no help or experience
The above photo is a snapshot of the very first thing you see on my website.
And I’m proud of it.
Maybe a little too proud, in fact.
You see, six months ago I didn’t know how to build a website. I didn’t know how to create a logo. I especially didn’t know how to add the logo to the website.
My best work has always been done with words and let’s just say that artwork—pictures in general—are not my strong suit. So when I set out to build my brand and realized I was only good at the “meat” of marketing (copywriting) and not the “milk” (visual branding) I was worried.
Because both are very necessary.
So I learned how to use Wordpress . . . well, I’m still learning, anyway. But I learned enough to build a decently fancy website for having no paid plugins and doing all the work myself.
And then I learned enough of how to use Affinity Designer to create my logo.
That was exciting.
Then I hit a roadblock: my punny, word-wizard self was suddenly stuck on my own copywriting!
I had a catchy slogan—multiple in fact—but I didn’t know what to do with the rest of my writing. Writing something that sells is a lot more complicated when oneself is the client.
I am happy to say I made it over that bump in the road—for the most part, since my worst critic (me) is always forcing me to rewrite different things.
But unfortunately I’ve been tinkering with my website for so long that I’ve let building my portfolio for others slip through the cracks!
Going forward I’ll be putting up SPEC ads and other copywriting samples here as a viewable portfolio. Until then, know that my best publicly-available samples are what I have made for my own brand . . . and I’m happy to make samples upon request that are tailored to your brand if you are looking to hire me but want to get an idea of what I can do first.
I can’t wait to work with you!

Not interested in my obsession with making words make sales? No problem! I have something for everyone in my generalist blog Going Out On A Whim; my faith-centered blog A Piece of My Mind; and my exclusive, behind-the-scenes community Lexi’s List, for supporters of my upcoming books.
See you there!
Well done and congratulations!
I find Wordpress very difficult. I am using Sqaurespace, but it is very expensive and am very much considering moving all my blogs over to Substack.
